No more hiding in Brisbane.
That is the word coming out of Jeff Horn’s training camp as the key terms for an April 21 clash with Terence Crawford have been established, with Horn and Crawford scheduled to fight at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.
Crawford has never been beaten and is generally regarded as one of the best boxers in the world on a pound-for-pound basis.
This is not aging Pilipino government official, Mr. Horn. This is no Pom journeyman.
Horn trainer Glenn Rushton told the AAP that negotiations to determine purse shares have been concluded satisfactorily for both camps and that all that remains to be done is to sign the contracts.
“As far as we’re concerned, it’s pretty much a deal,” Rushton said. “But no deal’s done until it’s done, so we just have to cross t’s, dot i’s and actually get this thing locked down.We have certainly agreed on all the key terms and from our side, it’s a go. Now Bob (Arum)’s got to tidy up some loose ends.”
They may have to tie down a loose cannon or two, as well, as it is only a matter of time before Conor McGregor begins to demand a shot at the winner and another $100 million windfall.
Then again, Horn or Crawford might not generate the sort of revenue McGregor seeks, as such paltry sums as $2 million were being floated for a fight between Horn and Anthony Mundine, and that $2 million was more than the initial figures being bandied about for a Horn v Crawford fight.
Horn’s plans to go against Mundine were thwarted because Crawford had the right to a mandatory challenge and if Horn had refused, Horn would have had to relinquish his WBO welterweight belt.
Meanwhile, Mundine is scheduled to meet another Australian, Tommy Browne, in Sydney next week and if he were to lose that fight, Mundine’s value as a Horn opponent would plummet.
According to Rushton in the AAP, “We weren’t saying no but there’s too many ifs,” Rushton said. “What if he (Mundine) loses to Tommy Browne? What if he gets injured? What if he doesn’t come up with the money? What if he doesn’t withstand the preparation?
For the record, Horn has not been in the gym since his wife gave birth to the couple’s first child just before New Year.
